Background of the Study
Academic writing in Nigerian universities is a critical medium for the dissemination of research findings and scholarly discourse. Syntactic clarity, which refers to the precision and coherence of sentence structure, is essential for ensuring that complex ideas are communicated effectively. This study investigates syntactic clarity in Nigerian university research papers, examining how scholars construct sentences, organize arguments, and integrate disciplinary conventions. Factors such as code-switching between indigenous languages and Standard English, as well as the influence of global academic writing standards, contribute to the diversity of syntactic styles observed in academic texts (Uche, 2023). By analyzing a representative corpus of research papers across various disciplines, the study aims to identify common syntactic challenges and propose strategies for enhancing clarity. This research is particularly relevant in the context of ongoing efforts to internationalize Nigerian scholarship while maintaining local linguistic identity (Onyema, 2024; Chima, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of syntactic clarity for academic communication, many Nigerian research papers suffer from inconsistent and ambiguous sentence structures. Such deficiencies can hinder the effective dissemination of research findings and compromise the quality of scholarly discourse (Uche, 2023). The lack of standardized syntactic practices, coupled with the influence of multiple language registers, creates challenges for both authors and readers (Onyema, 2024). This study seeks to address these issues by systematically examining the syntactic clarity of university research papers, thereby identifying areas for improvement and informing academic writing training programs (Chima, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the syntactic clarity of Nigerian university research papers.
To identify common syntactic issues and ambiguities.
To recommend strategies for enhancing academic writing.
Research Questions
What are the prevalent syntactic challenges in Nigerian academic writing?
How do these challenges affect comprehension and communication?
What measures can improve syntactic clarity in research papers?
Significance of the Study
This study contributes to enhancing academic communication by examining syntactic clarity in Nigerian university research papers. The insights gained will benefit educators, researchers, and academic writers by providing practical recommendations for improving language precision and overall research quality (Uche, 2023; Onyema, 2024; Chima, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of research papers from Nigerian universities and does not include other academic genres.
